Why groomers move to online booking
Grooming is hands-on work. You can't answer the phone with clippers in one hand and a wriggling cockapoo in the other. Every call you miss is a booking that might go to the groomer down the road, and every 'what have you got next week?' message eats into your evening.
Online booking lets owners see your real free times and book themselves at any time of day. You get a confirmed appointment in your diary, and the owner gets a confirmation and a reminder without you lifting a finger.
What free plans usually leave out
There are free booking systems aimed at UK groomers, and a few are well made. Before you commit, check where the free plan stops:
- Text reminders. Many free plans send email or app notifications only. Texts, which owners are more likely to see, are often on the paid tier.
- Staff. Free plans are often limited to one calendar. Take on an assistant or a second groomer and you may need to upgrade.
- Booking limits. Some free plans cap the number of bookings a month.
- Fees for your clients. Some apps charge owners a small convenience fee when they book through the app.
- Marketplace fees. Systems that list you in a consumer app can charge a one-off fee when they introduce a new client.
- Early-access deals. 'Free while we launch' is a promise about today, not next year. Check what the paid price will be.
None of this makes a free plan bad. It just means the real question isn't 'is it free?' but 'what will I pay once my business grows?'
What a dog grooming booking system needs to do
- Let owners book without an account. The fewer hoops, the more bookings you get.
- Handle different lengths of appointment. A full groom on a labradoodle takes far longer than a nail clip on a Jack Russell.
- Let owners book more than one service at once, such as a bath and brush plus a nail clip.
- Send a confirmation straight away and a reminder before the appointment.
- Give owners a link to reschedule or cancel, so you hear about changes early instead of at the door.
- Give each groomer their own diary if there's more than one of you.
- Work well on your phone, because that's where you'll check it.
Setting up your services by size and coat
The simplest way to take grooming bookings online is to list a service for each size or coat type, each with its own time and price. For example:
- Full groom, small dog (up to 10kg), 1 hour 30
- Full groom, medium dog, 2 hours
- Full groom, large or double-coated, 2 hours 30
- Bath and brush, small dog, 45 minutes
- Nail clip, 15 minutes
Add a line to each description saying what's included and that the final price may change for matted coats. It saves awkward conversations on the day and keeps your diary realistic.
Doing the maths on a paid system
A paid system only makes sense if it pays for itself. Here's a quick way to check. Take your average groom price, say £45. If online booking and reminders save you one missed appointment in a month, that's £45 back against a monthly fee of a few pounds. If they help you pick up one extra booking a month from someone who would never have phoned, the same applies.
You know your own numbers better than anyone. The point is that the price of the software matters less than whether it fills your diary and stops gaps.
Where Bookupy fits
Bookupy isn't free, and we won't pretend otherwise. It's one of the UK's lowest-priced booking systems: £8.99 a month flat, unlimited bookings, no commission, with a 30-day free trial so you can try it with real clients first.
Owners book free from your own booking page with no account and no app. They can book more than one service in one go, and confirmations include links to reschedule or cancel. Email reminders are included, and text reminders are an optional £5 a month. If you have staff, each groomer gets their own calendar, and if you run more than one salon you can manage them from one account. See Bookupy for dog groomers for the full set-up.
There are no fees for your clients, no fee on new clients and no cap on bookings. The price is the same whether you take 20 bookings a month or 200.
Questions
Is there a completely free booking system for dog groomers?
Yes, a few UK systems have free plans. Check whether text reminders, extra staff and unlimited bookings are included, and whether owners pay a fee to book.
Do dog owners need an app to book with Bookupy?
No. They choose a service and a time on your booking page, enter their details and get a confirmation by email.
Does Bookupy work for mobile groomers?
It can. You set your own services, hours and booking page. The booking form asks for a name and email (and a mobile if you use text reminders), not an address, so mobile groomers confirm the address with the owner by phone or email.
